My husband and I moved to Maryland with George four years ago when he was two. All of our family is in the Jersey/Philadelphia area. We moved here basically knowing no one. I met most of the amazing friends I've made here because of George. Whether it was through PT or Mommy and Me programs or just because he's so cute and friendly that he draws people in and makes them instant pals. There is one true friend I made last year, when George started Pre-K, that he has to share the credit for with Lift Me Up.
I was leaving school after dropping him off one day when another mom approached me because she noticed my very cool and stylish Lift Me Up decal on the back of my car. It turned out that her oldest was in George's class and her younger girl, Kennedy, was a few months older than my youngest. Kennedy, a beautiful, smart and sweet little cuddle bug has some developmental delays. They had also been lucky enough to find Lift Me Up and receive a carrier, which is how she spotted the decal and how an instant bond was formed.
Kennedy's mom is more than ten years younger than I am but our lives kind of mirror each other's to an extent, which gave us plenty to talk about right off the bat. We've turned out to be great support for each other, the kind that only other moms who have been down the extra needs road can understand. We talk each other through the scariest of appointments and tests for our little ones. We also celebrate the victories together, We are free babysitters for each other. That's right, I said I have a free babysitter. That is a HUGE deal for someone like me whose closest family is more than three hours away and whose husband is away for work most of the time. It's also a big deal for her, who I'm very proud of for going back to school after having two kids. She has to put in hours for her classes sometimes during the while her husband is working so Kennedy comes to play for the day. We take our kids to play groups and story times together and recently started taking them to a toddler art class. In the past year and a half she really has become one of my best friends and I have Lift Me Up to thank for that because their decal served as a conversation starter and their mission led to a bond. We are two moms that benefited from receiving the gift of wearing and because of that gift we found a support system in each other and what I know will be a life long friendship, not only for us but for our kids. I know I can say that I speak for both of us when I say Lift Me Up has been a blessing in so many ways and we will always be grateful. -- Michelle, recipient
